Well, I guess it’s time to blab my story for the world to read!
Here it goes!
I grew up in a small town in South Western Ontario called Wallaceburg. At a young age, I knew I was destined to be creative. I always wanted to be in dresses, studied ballet from the time I was 2 until I was 17, loved painting in any form, was crazy about writing and reading and even at one point took on designing clothes with some of mums’ old sheets and pillowcases.
When I made it to high school, I was ecstatic! I immediately made a great group of friends, who I’m privileged to still have amazing relationships with; I dove deep and got involved in a lot of extracurriculars.
While I loved the social aspects of school, I didn’t feel like any of the content I was being told to study was stimulating my mind and honestly, I just wasn’t interested. So, when it came time to apply for post-secondary education, I applied all over for just about everything under the sun. I was only 17, and I still have no idea how young people are supposed to make lifelong decisions at such a young age. I decided to turn down going to school and spent the summer after graduation exploring more options.
That’s how I ended up moving to Toronto, the first time.
I found a job posting for an entry level position with a growing charity organization that was quite revolutionary at the time. I interviewed, had the job within 20 minutes, and started the following week setting out on a Canada-wide speaking tour. Over the next 2 years, I traveled the country speaking in front of thousands of youth about global issues and social justice, and also had the opportunity to travel to Kenya, Ecuador and Mexico working with local communities and building much needed infrastructure.
I actually remember my experience in Ecuador still so clearly. I remember feeling so small in this big world and wondered how on earth I was going to make a splash. I remember that I actually wrote a poem about the power of positivity and that day, vowed to myself to be a constant sunshine for the people in my life.
When my contract was up after a whirlwind of life experiences at such a young age, I had no idea what my next move was going to be, but I knew I needed to sleep (HA!) and figure out who I was without the mission of a company driving me.
By then, my dad had met my wonderful stepmom and moved to New Brunswick where she was based. They offered to fly me out for a month-long visit, so I packed my suitcase and headed out.
Well, I fell in love with the Maritimes.
I began working in hospitality, serving and bartending in restaurants, made some incredible, supportive friends and ended up staying in New Brunswick for four years because it was so amazing. I finally had the time and courage to explore who I was, what I stand for and truly began to become the woman I am today.
I found out that I was strong for the first time.
However, nearing my 25th birthday, I decided that my life needed to take a turn and I wanted to continue to grow and discover what my future might be.
So, I decided to go back to school. The decision wasn’t easy to be honest; figuring out what to study and what I was interested in. Mostly because I was interested in so much! A friend gave me some great advice: “Take a look at your skills, what you’re passionate about and find something that fits.” I explored all of the skills that my previous work and life experience had given me. I was motivated, I worked hard, I managed time well, I was creative and had an eye for detail, and that’s how I came to marketing.
I moved back to Toronto and began studying, except this time, it was totally different. I was actually interested in the subject matter. To help put myself through school, I worked full-time at a restaurant downtown, so basically, I was overwhelmed; it was a great time in my life. I pushed myself and found that I had made the right call, I loved marketing so much. The strategies, the concepts, the drive.
Near the end of my program, I served a table one night at the restaurant and one of the women ended up asking what I did outside of serving. I told her I was soon graduating from a marketing program and was looking for somewhere to start. She said she was working for a tech startup and they were looking for marketing people. I interviewed the following week and started with them part-time while I was finishing up school. After graduation, I continued with them full-time and that’s where I began to grow my career.
Startup life was exactly the right place for me, and I soon developed a love for technology, how things are built and designed. I started as a team of 1 and within my four years there, grew to become the Marketing Director, managing a team of 10.
Those four years were probably my most transformative, personally and professionally.
Personally, I was looking inward, and discovered a lot about myself. I found out that I value honesty, kindness, and integrity above all else.
Professionally, I discovered I was capable.
I’m an experienced and creative leader bringing a growth mindset to my work – using content and marketing to help organizations grow in fast moving industries.
I’m also an eternal optimist, a proud feminist, and well, a bit of a control freak to be honest, but in the best way possible. I know what I want, and I go for it. Fail or succeed, it doesn’t matter; I’m a firm believer that the effort matters.
Due to COVID and some other extenuating circumstances, I found myself looking for a job for the first time in my career. Obviously not a great time to be looking, however, job posting after job posting, I just wasn’t finding anything I was interested in. Everything was so focused on one element of the marketing responsibilities I’ve came to know and love; I wanted something more.
That’s how I’ve decided to branch out on my own and start Lunar & Co. It’s something I’ve dreamt about for a long time, and am proud to say, I’ve channeled all of my wisdom into action, and this is the result!
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with and seeing so many women in business, and one common theme, no matter what industry or experience level, is the undying support we have for one another. Seeing this and being inspired, I knew Lunar & Co. needed to stand for something and be different from every other agency out there. I also knew that I wanted to work with people that I would admire, and there’s no one that I admire more than female bosses killing the game.
I believe that all women have the power to create the future they want and more importantly, to follow their dreams. At Lunar & Co., our team wants to help revive your dream, amplify your voice, and be your biggest cheerleader along the way!
I’m so excited to start this journey with all of your love and support. Let’s take this journey together!
