hosted website vs custom builds

First things first, what is hosting?

Every website you’ve ever visited is hosted on a server (aka where it lives!).

Web hosting makes the files that make up a website (code, images, etc.) accessible to view online

When a hosting service allocates space on a web server for a website to store its files, they are hosting a website.

Hosted websites

Hosted website platforms are usually an all-in-one buy. They provide the hosting and pre-designed templates, allowing more of a plug-and-play build.

Hosted templated websites allow customers to make changes easily, and usually come at a lower cost to build.

Examples: Squarespace, Showit, Wix, Shopify, etc.

Custom builds & self-hosting

A developer builds a site that has been custom designed using a software of their choice, build in optimization for search engines, and hosts the site performing regular maintenance, backups and system updates.

Custom site builds generally take longer to complete due to the higher level of client involvement and the creation of advanced functionality.

Purchasing a website can be difficult and confusing. There’s so many options out there to choose from with differing costs and features.

There’s pro’s and con’s to everything.

There’s no right or wrong choice here! You have to choose what’s best for your business.
