A popular topic of conversation lately on social has been about finding your niche in the market and focusing on that audience first.
But how do you find that niche audience? What do you look for and how do you position your business to appeal to them?
Well, at Lunar & Co., we’re all about that research!
Doing in-depth research into your audience can help you not only better understand who your audience really is, but where you can find them and how to use your marketing and social channels to appeal to them.
Here’s 5 tips to get your audience research started!
Create customer profiles based on ideal audience and secondary audience.
Once you’ve compiled data on your audience, create two separate profiles; one for your dream audience (go big with this one!) and one for a secondary audience that’s comparable but more attainable to start or more specific to your industry. Ex. As a brand designer, your ideal audience could be your ideal client whereas your secondary audience could be other designers looking for education and tips. Build out detailed information about them. Where do they live? What are their interests? What do they need from your business?
Determine what your audiences buying habits are.
Where is your audience shopping? What are they searching for? Are they looking locally for services? What channels do they use for product/service research? Knowing as much as possible about your audience’s buying habits helps you determine how to talk about your products or services, what channels you should be using to reach them and what kind of materials you should be creating to appeal to them.
What’s trending in your industry in the eyes of the buyer?
What type of content is your audience interacting with right now? What language is speaking to them? What products or services are trending and why are they interested in them? Where are they going for inspiration? Finding out what businesses and channels your audience goes to for guidance and inspiration gives you insights into their minds and what they could be looking for from you. This will also determine what types of content and channels you use to reach them.
What challenges are your audience currently facing?
What’s going on in the world that your audience is currently facing? Obviously the big one right now is the pandemic, but how has that affected your audience specifically? If you’re a brick and mortar that’s been shut down multiple times and doing curb side pickup, how can you help your audience reach your products? If you’re a service provider, how can you change up your offerings to open new channels and reach more people? Being open to a good ol’ pivot is important, but with in-depth market and industry research, you can better understand what direction to go in and how best to help your customers or clients.
What can you offer your audience to remain competitive in your space?
I mean, your business is different because it’s yours, but what makes you different? What’s that one thing that makes your business magical to your customers and clients? Compiling research on what your ‘competitors’ are doing can help you figure out how to position your unique business and offerings in your own way to stand out while also remaining competitive in your industry.
Research sucks sometimes! We get it!
But it’s an essential component to not only the branding and marketing process, but to the larger overall business strategy.
These are just a few tips we use with clients to get them started and learn more about how to reach their specific target audience for marketing and content.
